Japan: The Land of the Rising Sun
Well off the tourist trails in villages deep in the mountains and
small towns on the coast, you will find temples, shrines and
perfect gardens each providing their own
Japanese ambience oozing with culture and tradition.
Bright Lights and Good Food
First stop for most is the capital city of Tokyo, a vibrant hub of civilisation and buzzing with activity. Although this is an ultra modern city, as with anywhere in Japan its deep-rooted tradition can be witnessed everywhere you go and this is what makes Tokyo. The city is also a foodie’s paradise with more Michelin stars than anywhere else in the world with top class eateries to backstreet noodle bars, all of which add to the culinary intrigue of this already culturally intriguing city.
Culture
Well off the tourist trails in villages deep in the mountains and small towns on the coast, you will find temples, shrines and perfect gardens each providing their own Japanese ambience oozing with culture and tradition. Japan’s cultural and historical crown though is taken by Kyoto with small wooden shrines and elaborate temples found in every nook and cranny of the old Imperial city. A trip to Kyoto’s Gion district may also provide you with glimpses of Geisha in their colourful kimono gliding like ghost through the back streets or even performing in the spring dances under the cherry blossom providing more cultural intrigue for the visitor.
Relaxation
There are almost 80 active volcanoes in Japan leading to one of Japan’s favourite cultural activities - The ‘onsen’ or natural hot spring bath. There are thousands of hot spring baths dotted throughout Japan so wherever you are in the country you will not be far from an indoor, outdoor, public or private hot spring bath. Taking in the iconic Mount Fuji or staying among the peaks of the Japanese Alps, there is nothing quite as good as soaking up the views from a bath tub.
Tradition
As well as world class western style hotels there are other accommodation options in Japan. A stay in traditional guesthouse, or ryokan, offers a truly Japanese experience. At many ryokan you will be welcomed by your kimono-clad hostess and shown to your traditional room. Behind the sliding screen doors your simply decorated room will await with your futon laid out on the soft tatami mat floor. Many ryokan have their own hot spring baths for you to relax in and provide sumptuous kaiseki-style dinners consisting of an array of dishes including sashimi, tempura, sushi, noodles and local specialities for you to enjoy.
A far cry from the UK, travelling around Japan on the ultra efficient public transport system is the best way to go – on time, clean and comfortable. Experiencing the world famous ‘Bullet train’ you will be able to witness for yourself the friendliness and warmth of the local people, the natural beauty of the country, the romanticism within the Japanese culture and the traditions found within everyday life. On top of it all Japan is a lot cheaper than people think. All these factors come together to make a truly unique country and an amazing experience. You will fall in love with the Land of the Rising Sun.
