Jan joined Spa Travel in 1992 after a year out backpacking around
the world, that included working and living in Australia and New
Zealand.

With over 27 years experience, incredibly well travelled and
passionate about her job, we asked Jan for some tips and an insight
into life at Spa Travel ...

Best city to get lost in

Venice, it is the best way to explore it. There are surprising little
squares and churches, bridges and café’s round every corner and some fabulous boutique hotels.

Animal encounters

I just missed seeing a brown bear in Quebec last year, the quad bike in front of mine saw one
disappear into the bush but I was just too late. The scariest moment was on safari in South Africa
where we were within a few feet of two fighting white rhinos.

I was surprised to enjoy

Madeira. I went on a work trip recently and rather than the dull place I’d anticipated, it has new
funky boutique hotels, extensive Spas, exquisite country house Quinta’s and extensive walks through
spectacular scenery.

Best thing about the job

My clients, I have lots of lovely regular clients who often leave it to me to choose their holidays for
them. Also I love that every day is different, the job is an ongoing learning experience; we frequently
travel to new destinations, to gain first hand knowledge and ideas.

Inspiring ideas

I love inspiring clients who can't decide where they want to go. I often add a weird and wonderful
idea among the conventional suggestions, and recently sent a couple on a very successful Arctic
expedition to celebrate a 60th birthday.

Worst thing about the job

Timewasters. Unlike other professions, our expert advice and experience is free but it is exclusively for our clients. It annoys me that we can spend hours giving advice to someone for them to then book on the Internet to try to get a slightly cheaper price.

One more thing

Out of the office my real name is Jacquie, I had to change it when I joined Spa Travel as there was
another one. If I had known I would be here this long I would have chosen something more exciting
than Jan
